2017-2018 SCSD Budget

The Stevenson-Carson School District held their public Budget Hearing on Thursday, July 20th at 6:00 p.m. Karen Douglass, Superintendent, and Kris Grindy, Business Manager, gave a budget presentation that included a comparison of the 2016-2017 budget to the proposed budget for 2017-2018. The 2017-2018 Proposed Budget has projected revenues of $10,826,900 with projected expenses of $10,996,419. The net position of -$169,519 will come from the fund balance.

In preparing the 2017-2018 budget significant reductions were made because the April levy proposal was not approved by voters. In preparing the budget the district attempted to keep cuts away from the classrooms; however, when staff are eliminated, students are impacted. Some of the major reductions in next year’s budget include: seven teaching staff, ten support staff, 25-30% reduction in all school budgets, 30% reduction in technology and support, field trips, extracurricular activities including sports, and adopting any new curriculum.

By law, the district can only use approved levy funds in preparing a budget. Therefore, the August 1st ballot that includes a levy for the Stevenson-Carson School District was not considered in this budget. However, the proposed budget has a $150,000 contingency fund that will allow for some staff to be rehired and would allow for fall sports to begin should the new levy proposal be approved. If the levy is approved, at a future board meeting, the budget would be extended to include all new levy funds.

The Stevenson-Carson School Board of Directors will meet at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, July 27th to approve a budget for the 2017-2018 school year. If anyone has questions about the proposed budget, please contact the district office at 427-5674.
